Chris Dobrowolski
Chris Dobrowolski has been a familiar figure in and around the local art scene for many years and has exhibited his eccentric mechnical works of art throughout Europe & Japan.
Chris was a student on our BTEC Foundation In Art course and upon leaving went on to study at Humberside University and the Royal College of Art. He now teaches at the Leeds Metropolitan University.
He is best-known for his large-scale artistic inventions which have included a fully-functioning hovercraft made out of plastic bottles washed up on the banks of the River Humber, a tank made from reproductions of Constable paintings, and an aeroplane constructed using tea chests and newspapers.
“'Seascape Escape' was the title of the work that started it all. It was a boat I built in response to my experiences as an art student in Hull, England. The art school is close to the river Humber. I felt unhappy and disillusioned while I was there, and collected driftwood to build a boat to escape the situation. That piece led to more works built of waste material, all made with the same goal: escape. The things I wanted to escape from changed over time, as I grew older.”
